Prioritizing children’s media before kids get left behind

The Canadian children’s media industry has undergone significant changes recently, including financial contractions. It has not been easy to watch. At the Rocket Fund, we take pride in being a strong voice for kids, not only within our industry, but with governments and regulators. We get involved. We speak up. And sometimes, we need to do more. Together, we can start a movement to drive governments, regulators and legacy media companies to prioritize the creation of quality content for our children.

Speaking up for our kids

You’ve heard us say it time and again: high-quality Canadian children’s programming fosters positive values, builds diverse cultural awareness and pride, and sparks imagination and critical thinking through a mix of entertainment and education. Exposure to quality content can lead kids away from the more negative and sometimes toxic content that’s widely available to them.

Legacy companies, governments and regulators no longer seem to value the importance of the kids media sector. Any feeling of responsibility to children seems to have been lost. But, enhancing the well-being of children with new and relevant stories that help them navigate the world should far exceed the “burden” of financial investment in new kids content. If we don’t figure out how to finance and create new and relevant programs that are reflective of the world kids live in, we will have failed them.

Our President & CEO, Agnes Augustin, has written opinion pieces on these very topics. Read one in Kidscreen. And here’s another in Indiescreen.

We need a movement that prioritizes quality children’s content – now more than ever. How do we ensure kids are prioritized in future government decisions?

Collectively, we can make a difference. So, we’re reaching out to our industry to find out what’s important to you.
