Shaw Rocket Prize
If there’s one thing we know, it’s that kids love to be entertained. They’re mesmerized by visual stimulation from a very early age, and as they grow, they develop an inquisitive and curious nature. While kids themselves haven’t really changed, the way they enjoy their programming has. With this in mind, entertainment programs today need to cater to the changing viewing habits of the child, knowing that each one is unique.
We wanted to create something that would showcase the talent of our Canadian producers and their amazing Canadian content, and from this came the Shaw Rocket Prize, an annual award for the best independently produced children’s, youth or family program.
“The Shaw Rocket Prize is about giving kids a say; recognizing that they have opinions and letting them tell us what programs speak to them. Kids themselves get to reward the production companies who’ve created and delivered programs in a way that captivates their interest.” – Agnes Augustin, President & CEO
The Shaw Rocket Prize presents awards of $25,000 to the winning programs, as chosen by kids, in three categories: preschool, children’s, and youth and family. Finalists are selected by our esteemed International Jury, after which kids from across Canada watch the programs and explore the related digital content in order to select their favourite overall experience.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau created a video message for those in attendance at the 2016 Shaw Rocket Prize. Here’s what they had to say:

Our national Kids Jury selected these three programs as the best overall experience for 2016! Congratulations to Kate & Mim-Mim, Slugterra, and L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. Check out more past winners here.
We ask kids to vote for the best Canadian television and online experience by viewing the nominated shows and playing the games. All Canadian kids ages 17 and under are eligible to participate.
By submitting a vote, kids are entered into a draw to win scholarships, and our creative kids who send in a video vote have a chance to win the grand prize!
Congratulations to the 2016 Kids Jury winners!
